More 3D printed digital jibba jabba from yours truly. I’ve been working with Fusion 360 inputting algorithms, equations, and geometry. Working with things I really don’t fully understand, slicing and dicing until I find something I think is interesting. I then print these things out and see what they look like in the real world. I’m going to be calling these things Quantum Lantern.
Inspiration
This piece is based on the newly discovered aperiodic monotile called an ‘Einstein’ tile. Coincidentally sharing the name of the famous physician but more directly translated ‘one stone’.
All of this is about what I’ve been listening to and reading about another physicist Roger Penrose. He has his own tile too. His thoughts on consciousness, possibly being a quantum state in our nervous system rather than a computational phenomenon is inspiring. There is a short video introducing his ideas here. Heavy stuff, maybe, but since I went to art school and read Jung, I have been really interested in people’s perception of consciousness.
This direction has been influenced by involvement with Applied Art Scotland’s Distance project. I instigated my creating of objects by looking at scholars stones from China, Korea, and Japan. These naturally occurring and unadulterated stones would be elevated and venerated into the scholars desk for use in catalysing inspiration. I thought that I could create my own stones in virtual reality that were absolutely contrived and intentionally manipulated. The problem that I was having is that I was being held back by my own functional tableware limitations. I did make some objects into ceramic from the project. What I really wanted was to keep the skills and ideas gained in the project.
Intended Outcome of the Quantum Lantern
This is the next stage of these ideas, and I would like to make objects for contemplation and inspiration. Could possibly be used in expanding consciousness… plucking inspiration from the ether… scrying and divination, or to invoke memories and project manifestations into the future.
