Persevere Photo Exhibition
This idea came to me really recently as we are kind of preparing for our inclusion of the Leith Creative Trail from the 30th of November to the 8th of December. I have been slowly gathering kit for a darkroom in the basement of the studio, and I was wondering how I could show people what I’ve been up to. I am very much an amateur, and will never claim to be a photographer, although I really like the idea of taking analogue pictures. I do know some folk who enjoy taking photographs, and although the digital image is an everyday part of our life now, I felt that there could be some gravity with the black and white analogue print.
There has been some great donations of kit towards me experimenting with the darkroom including the essential enlarger that Jasmine Nealon kindly let me have.
Basically I thought of an idea of not only my photographs, but other people that I know that work, live, and have fun down in Leith to take part. I purchased 10 rolls of film from Analogue Wonderland, and had people shoot a roll and return it to me at the studio. I’ve developed the film and printed a show of 4 x 5 prints from all of the participants.
Here is an old map detailing the area and details of what and why not some areas are not included here.
The Outcomes and reasoning
There are a couple things I wanted to accomplish with this project. They are in no particular order:
- I wanted to bring people together
- I bought the film to elevate some of the stress or anxiety of not knowing the outcome
- I wanted to do a collaborative project that didn’t have a commercial focus
- I wanted to activate the studio in a different way making our practice and the studio itself more visible
- I basically asked for practical help in getting my head around black and white developing. Seeing different results from different cameras, aesthetics, and experience.
- I wanted to find out what my peers and friends thought of Leith. What they felt was an important representation of the area, and what they composed when in the liminal state of taking the analogue photograph.
- I wanted to find similarities between my ceramic practice and the act of creating a photograph.
