Fiona and I had a great short trip to Porto, Portugal last week. I had never been, and didn’t really know what to expect. I did a bit of looking into the language, and what sightseeing was on offer, but left it up to us hitting the ground running. What I did really look into was the public transportation links throughout the city, short distances, and further afield. The transport is amazing, and we took the tram a lot, and a train to Braga which was an hour away.
I felt very underdressed in my ragged clothes, but we found a couple really cool places to eat, drink, and people watch. The city of Porto is very tourist driven, but their are pockets, not unlike Edinburgh, where the locals congregate, and simpler less flashy food and drinks are on offer. Some of the better places we came across are here:
Apothek Wine Bar
This place was great, and the guy who served us was very very knowledgeable about his country’s wines. I knew about Port, and was not interested. I had also heard of green wine, and we enjoyed a red on his recommendation, and shared a bottle of white on another occasion. Would highly recommend.
Kind Kitchen
This is one of the best vegan restaurants I have ever been to. The menu was diverse, everything was really good and fresh. Highly recommended as an alternative to the meat/fish heavy menus seen in other parts of the city.
Candelabro
The second of the hip, but not up themselves places was here. Very cool staff, great selection of beers and wines, and it is a great spot when it was nice to sit outside and watch the machine that is Porto grind away with people and public services whipping past. Highly recomend the bookshop/gallery next door as well.

This is where I got the pictures develop in the carousel above. The staff were very professional and lovely, and they made my very amateur photos look decent.
