Studio Slip Recipe

I thought it was a good idea to amalgamate a bunch of notes on our studio slip.  Both Fiona and I have used this in various forms for years and on lots of different work.  You can find the recipe below, and I’ve also made it downloadable in a couple formats.  If you have any questions about it feel free to fire away.

Cyan Clayworks Studio Slip 2018 revision

This is the basic slip we use for both our earthenware and stoneware based classes. It has been very reliable and stable.

The following is the batch recipe that can be multiplied, and additions added to by percent.

China Clay (kaolin)

25

Ball Clay (we use hyplas 71)

25

Potash Feldspar

25

Flint (silica)

25

Total

100

Bentonite (suspender and hardener)

5

Sodium Silicate (75TW) in grams

0.3

Water

80

When using dry ingredients, please take adequate health and safety measures like wearing a respirator.

Mix all dry ingredients together. In a separate container, add the sodium silicate to the water and mix through. Gently add dry ingredients a little at a time. Ideally leave the slip overnight as it will be better left to slake down all of the ingredients. Push the slip through a #120 sieve to make sure the ingredients are completely suspended.
